Fall Camps - October 2015

Unzipping Your DNA-Genetics

Somewhere deep in your body are the secrets to who you are and where you came from. In this highly interactive class we will investigate our own body and the world around us at the molecular level. We will use tools and techniques used by geneticists in laboratories around the world such as micropipettes, centrifuges, PCR machines, electrophoresis and more. We will extract our own DNA to find out our genotype for specific traits. We will explore our heritage by looking at a conserved gene sequence. We will also sequence and compare genes from plants and animals in our neighborhoods as well as lab specimens. There are an estimated 8.7 million species on the planet and only a small fraction of them have been identified by scientists. Maybe you will discover a whole new species!

Led by Jennifer Cassano Ph.D. Jennifer is an accomplished biophysical chemist.   She researched the cytochrome c oxidase protein and its role in the human body.  She taught at the university level for 9 years and was awarded Teacher Assistant of the Year in 2014.  Jennifer has her M.S. from California State University, Hayward, and a Ph.D from UC Santa Cruz.

LEGO Engineering
Introduction

Get a head start by exploring the foundations of building and programming. We will have “way too much fun” creating airplanes, wild catapults and more and will learn through them basic concepts such as potential and released energy, balance, center of gravity and ratchet mechanisms. We will work to improve our projects by observing their performance and experimenting with incremental changes.

Co-led by Jaemin Seo and Nathan Cheng. Jaemin has been teaching robotics and leading FIRST Lego League for the past 7 years. His teams have won many awards during this time, including at the State Championship level. Jaemin attends UC Irvine where he majors in Economics.
