President Day Week 2013

Metalsmith - GOLD!

The Mayans worshipped it.  The Spaniards stole it from the Mayans.  Sir Francis Drake stole it from the Spaniards.  Gold!  You can do something ordinary such as buying gold jewelry or have loads of fun making them yourself.  Create beautiful creations using gold-filled metal, which is much easier to work with than 14-carat gold.  Kids will create bangles, rings and pendants that look and feel like their expensive cousins.  You will measure, cut, solder, anneal, and polish. Once done, you better hang on to your works of art because your creations will be worthy of thieves!

Led by Killean Evans and Sharon Ratton co-owners of Grime Jewelry.  Killean holds a MFA from Academy of Art University and BFA from Memphis College of Art.  Sharon is a BFA candidate at the Academy of Art University.  Both are awards winning metalsmiths.

Think Neuroscience!

Dive into the mind-boggling world of the brain and nervous system! We will discover how the nervous system helps us remember, learn and feel. Through the dissection of a sheep brain and observation of a real human brain, we will explore the different parts of the brain that let us sense the world around us and perform actions with our body. With the help of very cute cockroaches we will hear electrical activity of what we think of as otherwise silent neurons. We will learn about neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and epilepsy and try to think of possible solutions harnessing our new knowledge of the brain. Come join us to what is considered one of the 21st century’s hottest subjects in science.

Led by Erica Warp Ph.D.. Erica is the creator of the interactive children's book series about neuroscience entitled The Adventures of Ned the Neuron. She received her PhD in Neuroscience from Berkeley, where she also taught neuroscience, an MSc from Kings College London and a BA from Brown University.
