Forest to Frame

Trees are fabulous!  They filter our water, supply us with oxygen, provide habitat for plants and animals, moderate Earth’s temperatures and store atmospheric carbon. We will visit some of San Francisco’s impressive trees in Golden Gate Park and will learn hands-on about photosynthesis and carbon capture using real scientific instruments. Trees provide infinitely renewable wood but cutting them down also takes away a valuable resource from the planet.  Using sustainability principles, you will build a chair or a bench out of wood to bring a touch of the magnificent outdoors into your room.

Kids will use handsaws, hammers, drills, screwdrivers, files and other tools.  Electric saw excluded.

Michael Patterson

Led byMichael Patterson

With the help of his father and brother, Michael built his first tree house at the age of 6.  Mounted 7 feet off the ground, the tree house was complete with real roof, a couch, a TV and is still standing tall to this day.  Since then he has been helping his dad in his woodshop building cabinets and other fun projects.

Michael previously co-taught at Celsius in the Architecture camp.

Michael is a graduate of our host site, Raoul Wallenberg High School,  where he was the captain of the basketball and track teams.  He is currently an economics major at San Francisco State University. He is planning on becoming a firefighter so that he can save houses and tree houses from fire.
