FIRST LEGO League Team (FLL)

Spend an afternoon in great company and with our fabulous team at our year-round studio on Balboa Street.

Sundays, 2024-25 Season
What the Olympics are for sports, and the Nobel Prize is for science, FIRST Lego Robotics is for kid’s engineering. Join Celsius and Beyond’s award-winning team this Fall to participate in the world’s most prestigious robotics competition for youth.
You will learn about project management, computer programming, robotics design, analytic thinking, problem-solving, research skills, long-term projects, open-ended tasks, and, best of all, working as a team.
Our team is limited to precisely 8 participants, so please register early.
Age: 9-14
Fee: $1,080—Includes 16 hours of semi-private instruction, group instruction, additional hours before competition, instructor time at the competition, competition material, registration for the program, and competition.
A team effort worthy of an award requires many hours. The minimum number of hours is 36, with additional hours before and during the competition.
Parents’ assistance is required with the research aspect of the project.

Our admired and beloved instructors, Jae and Stella, will lead the team.
Jae led the FLL robotics team for 16 years, 7 of them at Celsius. As the founder of STREAM Foundation, he has been involved in robotics classes, projects, and outreach programs. He is currently a software process automation developer.
Stella taught robotics and computer science to elementary school children and UCSF Benioff Hospital students for many years. She also was a student and leader of FLL. Stella graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.S. in bioengineering, electoral engineering, and computer science and an M.S. in electrical engineering and computer science.
Meeting time: Sundays
September: 10 am – 2pm
The entire team will study the challenge, design the robot, and strategize

October and November: choose between 10-12 pm or 12-2 pm
Each pair will be working with one of the instructors for 2 hours.

December: 10-2 pm and evening time
Practice and troubleshooting before the competition.

Competition Day: A weekend day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., sometime in late to early December. The organizers will announce the exact date later.

Students are encouraged to attend all sessions.
The Regional Competition in mid-November will be held in the Bay Area [15 to 60-minute drive]. The State Championship (if applicable) will also be held in the Bay Area in February. The International competition (if applicable) is usually held in St. Louis in April.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organization that helps young people discover and develop a passion for science. It was founded 20 years ago by MIT scientists and attracted 300,000 students from 51 countries last year!
