Art and Mathematics
Mathematics is everywhere throughout the universe. We will investigate the structure of flowers, fruits, and seeds to find the mathematical principles that govern their shape such as the Fibonacci sequence, the Golden Ratio, patterns, symmetry, spirals, and more. Drawing inspiration from these, we will create art that is different from nature’s creation but uses the same principles. In honor of Leonardo da Vinci, who saw science and art as complementary disciplines, we will use mathematics in our art to create three dimensions on the two-dimensional canvas in front of us. As we use acrylic paint, wax, charcoal, plant dyes, and more, the line between art and math will blur, leaving on display only pure beauty.
Parents are invited to our open house on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
