Cancer Research and Publicaction

1 in 2 men, and 1 in 3 women, will likely be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.  What does it take to outsmart cancer? The first step is to find out what causes cancer.

In this two-week program, you will be conducting real-life laboratory experiments testing a possible connection between different substances and cancer cells.

Students will start by choosing a substance, such as a chemical, food, or drug, that they suspect to be implicated in cancer but that there has been no substantial evidence found yet. Using scientific literature, you will identify specific genes that are involved with your chosen substance.

You will then look at gene expression data in online databases, using statistical testing to correlate between genes you identified to be implicated with your chosen substance and genes that are well known to be associated with cancer.  We will then aggregate the data of all students together to look for different correlations.

To test whether your chosen substance actually correlates with cancer-related genes, you will grow and feed cancer cells, and divide them in flasks. With the help of quantitative PCR, you will then measure how the expression of the genes can change in response to the addition of the substance.

At the end of this two-week program, you will be able to assemble figures and write a research manuscript describing your work and findings.  If you choose, you could also submit your paper for publication.

The fee for this 2-week camp is $1580.  The price includes all materials, including expensive lab supplies.

Harrison Li, Cambridge U and UCSF Med School

Led byHarrison Li, Cambridge U and UCSF Med School

Harrison was inspired to pursue medicine after his family was struck with a tragic cancer diagnosis. The experience motivated him to dedicate his life to finding more effective treatment and screening options for cancer and other devastating illnesses. He has always loved mentoring youth and wants to inspire others to see how science, from laboratory benchtop studies to translational and healthcare disparities research, is critical to saving lives.

Harrison is a prolific researcher. He has published 30 peer-reviewed papers in diverse areas such as cancer immunology, intratumor microbiome, and COVID-19 outcome disparities. He is interested in the application of artificial intelligence and data mining to uncover diagnostic markers, treatment targets, and systemic disparities in access to care and treatment outcomes. He has presented his work at numerous conferences and received 13 awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Churchill Scholarship.

Harrison has a B.S. in Bioengineering from the University of California San Diego and a Master of Philosophy in Medical Science from Cambridge University UK in Cancer Research. He is currently a medical school student at the University of California San Francisco.
