Chemical Reactions Bonanza

Usually blowing things up, or even just setting them on fire, is discouraged, but in our chemical reactions camp, it is perfectly fine and encouraged!
Learn about the five primary types of chemical reactions and conduct some of them yourself. We will mix, shake, and heat chemicals as well as everyday materials, to create a Coca-Cola volcano, a glowing Gummy Bear, a glow-in-the-dark stick, Silly Putty, a lava lamp, and color-changing solutions. We will melt spoons, hold fire in our hands, create smoke without fire, and more! After each reaction, we will learn about the chemical structure of the materials and why they react the way they do.
For extra fun, we will create tasty chemical reactions: ice cream, yogurt, and kombucha, and finish up with a visit to a beer brewery in the city to learn about fermentation.

Children need to have decision-making capability to participate in this camp. We reserve the right to move a child to a different camp should we feel we are unable to keep our uncompromising commitment to safety.

Tobi Adedokun

Led byTobi Adedokun

What could possibly be more exciting than chemistry? Tobi majored in chemical engineering and after graduation, went off to work happily ever after at Edwards Lifesciences in Quality Engineering. One day a vendor demonstrated a heart valve. The connection between engineering and medicine immediately felt right to Tobi and she knew right there and then that was what she really wanted to do.

Previously Tobi taught ESL students in elementary school and acted as a liaison between students and parents, using her fluency in Spanish.

Tobi is currently a medical school student at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF). She holds a B.A. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alabama, where she graduated cum laude.
