Microplastics

The world had the Bronze Age, then the Iron Age, and now we sadly are entering the Plastic Age. In addition to the huge amount of plastic trash that exists in every corner of the world, tiny and microscopic pieces of plastic seep into the soil, the fish and the air, posing a threat to both animal and human health. Where does microplastic come from? Who is it bad for?

After getting seafood from the local grocer, we will dissect and use different chemicals and lab equipment to filter out any microplastic from their bodies. We will stain, and then watch them under a microscope equipped with UV light. After identifying the type of plastics, we will collect data and analyze it. We will put our findings on a poster that parents can see when they come at the end of the week to our open house.

Debra is a die-hard science enthusiast and an ocean conservationist. She has been teaching science in Massachusetts, and this year is on a Sabbatical, but she has taken a break to lead our spring camp.

She teaches science at the Field Research Program at Columbia University and at the Berkshire Waldorf High School in Stockbridge, MA. She is also a NASA GISS (Goddard Institute for Space Studies) Education Ambassador. Debra is also a certified Advanced Open Water Diver. She collaborates with scientists to collect data on marine life.

Debra holds an M.A. from New York University in science education.

Fees and Policies

  • Early Bird Rate (until March 31) is $1680 per 3 weeks.
  • Camp Fees after March 31st are $1780 per 3 weeks
  • An annual insurance/registration fee of $25 is required for each family account.

Discount

  • Multiple Session Discount – Also applicable to siblings
    • Sign up for 2 sessions: receive a total of $40 off
    • Sign up for 3 sessions: receive a total of $75 off
    • Sign up for 4 sessions or more: $140 off or more (at $35 per session)
  • Refer families who have never attended a Celsius camp before and receive either a credit of $50 off a future camp or a refund of $30 per referral. Further details can be found on the registration site. No cross referrals accepted.

Extended Care

  • Early morning extended care from 8am to 9am
  • Afternoon extended care from 4pm up to 5pm.
  • Advanced payments (prior to start of camp) for all Extended Care are $12 per hour, or $130 per week ($8.5hr) for all 5 days for one/two hours per day).
  • Ad Hoc during the week of camp are billed at $15 per hour.
  • Pick up after 5pm will be charged at a rate of $2.00 per minute (no grace)
  • Extended Care is billed in one hour increments after a 10 minute grace period.

Cancellation Policy

Covid-19 Update: We plan to hold our camps as planned. If however, Shelter in Place restrictions remain at the time of our camp, or if the CDC recommends canceling activities such as camps, we will provide a full refund.

-Any changes (other than cancellation) to previously confirmed sessions shall be assessed a $40 fee. Transferring sessions is subject to availability.

– In the event of a required entire camp closure during a session, we will refund 50% of fees paid on a pro-rata basis for days not used, with the cancellation fee to you not to exceed $500. This is out of a commitment to our instructors.

– In the event that the SFDPH orders us to close a specific pod(s) for 10 days due to an outbreak, no refund will be issued.

– Your $500 deposit is non-refundable if the program is operating, and you choose to cancel more than two weeks prior to the start of a session, for whatever reason you may have. The balance paid will be refunded to you.

– No refunds will be issued for cancellations made by you for any reason less than 14 days prior to the start of a session, however partial credits on your Celsius account are available as follows:

– More than 7 days and less than 14 days cancellation notice prior to the start date of the session, a credit for 80% of the total price paid less the $500 non-refundable fee.

– Between 3 and 7 days notice = 50% credit of total price paid less the $500 non-refundable fee.

– Less than 3 days notice no credit and no refund for any cancellations.

Please Note: We are sorry, but there are no refunds or reduction in fees for days missed due to illness, absence, last-minute vacations/trips, change in family circumstances during camp sessions, suspension or dismissal.

Payment Policy

We accept cash, check, e-check and credit cards (Visa/Mastercard/Discover).Reservations are not confirmed without payment received. Online registration andpayment ensures immediate confirmation. Payments by check should be sent in within 3 days of making an online reservation or the spot will be released.
